I'm a parent/guardian logging in. Why don't I see all my children listed?
If, after logging in, a parent/guardian does not see all of their children the issue must first be corrected in PowerSchool. Once the contact information is updated in PowerSchool, the messaging system will sync and display correctly.
Do teachers have to use CSDNB-DM to communicate with students and families?
No. CSDNB-DM is an added tool for communication. Staff may continue to use more traditional methods if they choose at this time. However, it is important to note that CSDNB-DM is a district-approved and vetted platform. It offers built-in translation services, is monitored by the district, and provides an added layer of protection for staff by keeping communication secure and accessible if needed for records requests (such as FOI).
What is the difference between a Chat Room and a Direct Message in CSDNB-DM?
Each class automatically has a Chat Room (think of it like an announcement stream). Teachers can post messages for the whole class to see, but parents and students cannot reply. Membership in these rooms is synced directly with PowerSchool, so as students join or leave a class, the Chat Room updates automatically. Teachers don’t need to add or remove anyone. In addition to Chat Rooms, teachers can also send Direct Messages to parents or students. These messages are automatically translated into the recipient’s preferred language, and parents/students can reply. Importantly, parents cannot start a chat with a teacher. They can only respond once a teacher sends a message. Teachers can access Direct Messaging through PowerTeacher or in the CSDNB app. This feature is web-based, so no phone is required (though the app can be used on a phone if desired).
Will families who don’t have the app downloaded receive messages sent in CSDNB-DM?
No. If families have not downloaded and logged into the CSDNB App, messages sent through CSDNB-DM will not reach them. To ensure families are connected, schools should introduce CSDNB-DM through their Messages XR (Alert System). As a best practice, teachers should also send an email to their families letting them know they will be using this tool and encouraging parents/guardians to download the app and log in. A template email is available here.
Is translation automatic?
Yes. Messages sent through CSDNB-DM are automatically translated into the recipient’s preferred language, based on their settings in the CSDNB App. Teachers will see the original and translated versions.
Can families send messages to teachers first?
No. Parents/guardians cannot initiate a chat. They may only reply once a teacher sends a message.
What if a parent/guardian doesn’t receive my message?
If families don’t see your message, first confirm they have downloaded the New Britain Public Schools app and logged in. If they are still missing messages or children from their account, their contact information in PowerSchool must be corrected.
Can students use Direct Messaging with teachers?
Yes, students can reply to Direct Messages initiated by a teacher, but they cannot start a conversation.
Are messages private?
Yes, Direct Messages between staff and families are private, but all communication is archived and monitored by the district. This provides accountability, supports FOI requests, and adds protection for staff.
How does CSDNB-DM support record keeping?
Because CSDNB-DM is monitored and archived by the district, all communication is automatically stored. This eliminates the need for teachers to screenshot or manually save records of parent communication.
